Canonbie and District Residents Association

Scottish registered charity SC045703

A major Community Planning Appraisal in 2013, funded by Dumfries & Galloway Council and NHS, recommended the setting up of a new constituted community organisation for Canonbie. The Residents Association initially grew out of community opposition to coal developments, that has led to a growing recognition of the strengths of this rural community, and a desire to celebrate and protect values of people and place. More recently the Association has joined the Development Trust Association (Scotland)

Membership

Membership of the Association is open to all local residents of Canonbie & District, aged 16 and over. (Co-terminous with Community Council boundaries.) Membership is free, and you need do nothing further, although we encourage members to get involved, and make a positive contribution

Ongoing Activity

In September 2014 members voted to apply for charitable status and to become a Development Trust. This enables the Association to own and manage assets, and to run or support businesses on behalf of the community. A key feature of CDT status, is that any surplus generated, is reinvested in the community, in projects agreed by the membership.
